Natural Medicine for Cats - Which Essential Oils Are Safe

Are you in search of natural remedies for your feline friends? If you worry about the side effects of prescriptions from the vet, then this article is for you. Natural medicine for cats will allow you to treat your princes and princesses for things like ticks without the toxins that are present in collars or sprays.

Controversy
It seems the subject of which essential oil digize are safe for cats has been controversial lately. In doing research for this article, I found strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Some people say no essential oils should be used around cats, not even in a diffuser (aromatherapy). Some people say anything goes. Some people say "no melaleuca" (tea tree oil). Hopefully, we will be able to clear up some of the misconceptions about essential oils and cats in this discussion.

What I CAN say is that I have used a combination of bergamot and oregano on one of my cats for tapeworms with no ill effects. The oils were thoroughly diluted and rubbed on his feet twice a week for two weeks (so only four times total). You MUST be sure to thoroughly dilute the oils when you use them on the cat's feet and DO NOT do it very often. Remember, this advice is not intended to contradict any treatment recommended by your vet.

Aromatherapy for Cats
Sorry, but I have to get into just a little bit of chemistry to explain this section, so bear with me. (I know, I wasn't good at it either!)
Hydrosols are the key to safe aromatherapy for cats. What are hydrosols? Good question-I hadn't heard of them either. According to Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals, by Kristen Leigh Bell, hydrosols are "the water-based byproducts of the steam distillation of essential oils".
What does this mean for your cat? It means that hydrosols are extraordinarily gentle substances, sort of like herbal tea. Their subtle fragrances make them tolerable and well accepted by cats.

Hydrosols or Drugs?
So, if you had a choice between taking a cat with allergies to the vet and receiving the standard treatment of a prednisone shot or pills, or using hydrosols and holistic supplements to manage those symptoms, which would you choose?
The natural route is not only safer, it's smarter. Natural essential oil digize treatments will boost the cat's immune system instead of tearing it down with the use of steroids that would suppress the immune system.
